Stockton Mine

Stockton Opencast Mine, the largest opencast mine in New Zealand, is located between 500 m and 1100 m above sea level in the Buller Coalfield, 35 km north of Westport on the West Coast of the South Island. The area experiences high rainfall of approximately 6,000 mm annually, cool temperatures, considerable cloud and mist, and occasional frosts and snow.

The mine, operated by Solid Energy, delivers high-quality steelmaking coal for export. The mine has sufficient economically recoverable resources to continue producing for at least another 20 years.

The Stockton Mine Cypress Extension is a $60 million development to extend the operational area of Stockton Mine.

In 2007, Solid Energy completed a major project to collect and relocate native land snails from the Mt Augustus ridgeline.
